Christian Sewing is Chief Executive Officer and a member of the Management Board at Deutsche Bank. In 2021 he took on additional responsibility for Human Resources. Before that, he was also responsible for the Corporate Bank and the Investment Bank.

Mr. Sewing joined Deutsche Bank in 1989. Since then, he has held various positions at the Bank, including on the Management Board for Legal, Incident Management Group and Group Audit; responsibility for Deutsche Bank’s Private & Commercial Bank (including Postbank); Head of Group Audit; Deputy Chief Risk Officer; and Chief Credit Officer. He has worked in Frankfurt, London, Singapore, Tokyo and Toronto. From 2005 to 2007, Christian Sewing was a member of the Management Board of Deutsche Genossenschafts-Hypothekenbank.

Ronald J. Daniels became the 14th president of Johns Hopkins University in 2009. A law and economics scholar, Daniels previously served as provost and professor of law at the University of Pennsylvania and dean and James M. Tory Professor of Law of the Faculty of Law at the University of Toronto. He is a fellow of the American Philosophical Society and a member of the Order of Canada.

At Johns Hopkins, Daniels has focused his leadership on several key areas: strengthening inter-disciplinary collaboration in research and education, enhancing student access, deepening engagement with the city of Baltimore, and supporting economic and social innovation. During his tenure, the university has launched of a series of multi-disciplinary initiatives aimed at addressing some of society’s most vexing issues, bolstered the efforts of faculty, staff and students to translate discoveries into novel technologies, invested heavily in student access, and extended its significant community partnerships.

HONORARY CO-CHAIR

Ambassador Gutmann was sworn in as the U.S. Ambassador to Germany on February 8, 2022. From her start at the 2022 MSC, Ambassador Gutmann has engaged in extensive outreach throughout Germany.

She has advanced the U.S.-Germany partnership during the Zeitenwende (historic turning point), combatted the rise of antisemitism, and promoted alliance efforts to support Ukraine’s defense of its democratic sovereignty against Russia’s unprovoked war. She was the longest serving President, from 2004-2022, of the University of Pennsylvania, an Ivy League university with a renowned health care system and Philadelphia’s largest employer (of over 50,000). She has published extensively on the practical value of democracy, education, health care, and human rights.

Named by Fortune magazine in 2018 as one of the “World’s 50 Greatest Leaders,” Dr. Gutmann has been honored with awards from Harvard University, the Carnegie Corporation, the Anti-Defamation League, Urban Affairs Coalition, and the Leo Baeck Institute, among others.

Dr. Gutmann graduated magna cum laude from Harvard-Radcliffe College, earned her master’s degree from the London School of Economics, and her doctorate in Political Science from Harvard University. She is married to Columbia University professor Michael W. Doyle.

Emily Haber

HONORARY CO-CHAIR

Emily Margarethe Haber has been German Ambassador to the United States since June 2018. Immediately prior to this, Haber, a career diplomat, was deployed to the Federal Ministry of the Interior, serving as State Secretary overseeing security and migration at the height of the refugee crisis in Europe.

In this capacity, she worked closely with the U.S. administration on topics ranging from the fight against international terrorism to global cyberattacks and cybersecurity.
In 2009, she was appointed Political Director and, in 2011, State Secretary at the Foreign Office, the first woman to hold either post. Earlier in her career, she served at the German Embassy in Ankara and in Berlin as Deputy Head of the Cabinet and Parliamentary Liaison Division, as Director of the OSCE Division, and as Deputy Director-General for the Western Balkans. Emily Haber has extensive knowledge of the Soviet Union and Russia, having worked both in the Soviet Union Division at the German Foreign Office and at the German Embassy in Moscow. From 1975 to 1980, she studied history and ethnology in Cologne, earning her PhD.

GOVERNOR, NEW JERSEY

Philip D. Murphy took the oath of office for a second term as New Jersey’s 56th governor on January 18, 2022.

Since taking office in 2018, Governor Murphy has focused on building a stronger, fairer, and more affordable New Jersey. Governor Murphy has put a special emphasis on making New Jersey more welcoming to both established high-tech enterprises and start-up companies in the innovation economy. Under the governor’s leadership, New Jersey has emerged as a leader in the deployment of clean energy technologies, includingone of the nation’s most-aggressive proposals for the development of offshore wind.

From 2009 until 2013, Governor Murphy served as the United States Ambassador to The Federal Republic of Germany, appointed by President Obama. In 2014, Governor and Mrs. Murphy founded New Start New Jersey, a “think-and-do tank” dedicated to seeking new policy directions to grow New Jersey’s economy and middle class. The Murphys partnered with the John J. Heldrich Center for Workforce Development at Rutgers University to create the New Start Career Network, which specifically helps long-term unemployed New Jerseyans over age 45 get back into the workforce. Prior to entering public life, Governor Murphy worked for over twenty years at Goldman Sachs, starting as an intern in 1982 and ending in 2003 as a member of the firm’s management committee.

STRING QUARTET

Bergamot Quartet is fueled by a passion for exploring and advocating for the music of living composers with creative programming, community-oriented audience building, and frequent commissioning.

Upcoming highlights include performing at Merkin Hall for the Ukraine Contemporary Music Festival, curating/presenting an evening at Roulette for the SONiC Festival, and being on faculty for the Creative Music Institute at Arts Letters and Numbers this summer. Their 2022 season included releasing their debut album on New Focus Recordings featuring a work by member Ledah Finck with percussionist Terry Sweeney; a co-commission and album release of Darian Thomas with Sō Percussion as part of Sō’s Flexible Commissions project; and a collaboration with composer Dan Trueman on a set of “Cross Quartets and Quintets” inspired by Hardanger fiddle cross-tunings.

Based in New York City, Bergamot Quartet is Ledah Finck and Sarah Thomas, violins; Amy Tan, viola; and Irène Han, cello. Based in New York City, Bergamot Quartet recently completed their residency as Graduate String Quartet at the Mannes School of Music, where they were mentored by the JACK Quartet, and the Klangspuren Chamber Music Lab in Innsbruck, Austria.
