2026 is yet another super election year in Germany, with two states having held elections in the spring and three voting in September. Perhaps none are so closely watched as the elections in Saxony-Anhalt, where the far-right populist Alternative for Germany (AfD) has led in the polls for almost a year. It is even possible that after the September 6 elections, for the first time in the Federal Republic, a far-right party could gain a majority of seats and form a state government. This webinar will analyze the results of the state elections in Saxony-Anhalt and the implications for the upcoming elections in Mecklenburg-West Pomerania, where the AfD also leads in the polls, and Berlin on September 20.
Marcel Lewandowsky is a political scientist and professor for government and policy research at the University of Halle-Wittenberg. His work focuses mainly on populism, party systems, and democracy in international comparison. He has published numerous articles, chapters, and books on these topics.
