In light of the May 27 proposal from Brussels for an EU pandemic recovery fund, this discussion will be an opportune moment both to take stock of the large-scale fiscal and monetary interventions that have been pursued and proposed on both sides of the Atlantic and to look ahead as the United States, Germany, and other countries in the European Union move to a partial re-opening of their economies. What policies have been effective, can the U.S. and Europe learn from each other’s experiences, and what is on the horizon for transatlantic economic policies as governments move to a second phase in their approach to this unprecedented supply and demand shock?
