Prof. Dr. Richenhagen was the first—and for many years the only—German CEO of a U.S. Fortune 500 company. He is also a true Renaissance Man, displaying interest and knowledge in many different areas: In addition to his expertise in all agribusiness matters, he has a degree in Theology and Romance Literature, speaks four languages, and has his MBA.

Ronald J. Daniels became the 14th president of The Johns Hopkins University in March 2009. Previously, he was provost and professor of law at the University of Pennsylvania (2005-2009) and dean and James M. Tory Professor of Law at the University of Toronto (1995-2005).

Since arriving at Johns Hopkins, President Daniels has focused his leadership on three overarching themes: enhanced interdisciplinary collaboration, increased student accessibility, and community engagement. As Chair of the Executive Committee for Johns Hopkins Medicine, he works closely with the trustees of Johns Hopkins Medicine, serving as a bridge between the university and health system.

Peter Wittig has served as German Ambassador to the United States since April 2014. Prior to this, he was German Ambassador to the United Nations in New York and represented Germany during its tenure as a member of the UN Security Council in 2011 and 2012. There, he drew on his wide expertise in United Nations matters, having previously served as Director-General for United Nations and Global Issues at the German Foreign Office in Berlin.

Wittig joined the German Foreign Service in 1982. He has served at the Embassy in Madrid; as private secretary to the Foreign Minister at the headquarters, then located in Bonn; and as Ambassador in Lebanon and in Cyprus. He was the German Government Special Envoy on the “Cyprus question” (the division of Cyprus). He has acquired extensive knowledge of the Middle East. Before starting his career in the German Foreign Service, Wittig studied history, political science, and law at Bonn, Freiburg, Canterbury, and Oxford universities and taught as an assistant professor at the University of Freiburg. His wife, Huberta von Voss-Wittig, has worked as both a journalist and a writer. The couple has four children: Valeska, Maximilian, Augustin, and Felice.

Theo Waigel

Dr. Theo Waigel was the longest-serving Federal Minister of Finance of the Federal Republic of Germany, from April 1989 to October 1998. He served at a formative time for Germany—including during unification—and played a key role in European monetary union and the formation of the euro. Dr. Waigel started his career in public office as a member of the Krumbach County Council, went on to serve members of the Bavarian state government, and was elected to the Bundestag in 1972. He has held a number of leadership positions with the Christian Social Union (CSU) over the years, including Chairman of the Junge Union Bayern, Chairman of the Bavarian CSU faction in the Bundestag, First Vice-Chairman of the CDU/CSU parliamentary group, and Chairman of the CSU. Since leaving public office, Dr. Waigel has practiced law at GSK Stockmann + Kollegen in Munich and served as the Compliance Officer at Siemens. As of 2016, he is Of Counsel at WAIGEL Rechtsanwälte in Munich. He studied at the Universities of Munich and Würzburg. He holds a doctorate in Legal and Political Science and is an Honorary Doctor of Law of the University from South Carolina.

Black tie optional means that male guests are invited to wear tuxes and women may wear evening gowns or cocktail dresses — what you would wear at a black-tie affair — but you don’t have to. About GLAD
AGI inaugurated the Global Leadership Award (GLAD) in 1994 as part of the Institute’s mission to foster stronger ties between the United States and Germany. The Award recognizes the achievements of business leaders who, through their personal and professional accomplishments, have helped strengthen the close partnership between Germany and the United States.The Award is presented in the fall at a gala dinner in New York which is also the Institute’s principal annual fundraising event. Guests at the gala include hundreds of top-level corporate executives, political figures, diplomats, NGO leaders, and members of the academic community, making this event a “celebration” of German-American partnership in the truest sense. The gala dinner is underwritten principally by individual and corporate sponsors. Net proceeds from the event provide a substantial portion of the funding for the Institute’s scholarly programs. Sponsors receive invitations to the Dinner, on-site acknowledgements, complimentary advertising opportunities, and other benefits. Sponsorship fees are tax-deductible to the full extent of the law in both Germany and the United States. Sponsorship is also an effective way for a company to publicize its support for a stronger German-American partnership before an important audience of corporate and government leaders who care deeply about this relationship.
