Deutsche Bank Chief Executive Officer Christian Sewing to Receive Global Leadership Award
The American-German Institute at Johns Hopkins University (AGI) will honor Christian Sewing, Deutsche Bank Chief Executive Officer (CEO), with its 2023 Global Leadership Award at a gala dinner on April 20 in New York. The award recognizes Sewing’s enduring positive influence on the German-American partnership. New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy will present Sewing with the award in front of an audience of corporate leaders and policy experts from the U.S. and Germany.
Christian Sewing has been the Chief Executive Officer of Deutsche Bank since 2018, and he has been a member of the Management Board since 2015. In 2019, he launched a strategic transformation plan for the Bank, with the most fundamental reforms at the Bank in decades.
“A strong finance sector is an integral part of the enormously productive German-American economic relationship,” says Martin Richenhagen, Chairman of the AGI Board of Trustees. “Christian Sewing has demonstrated outstanding leadership in transforming Deutsche Bank and orienting it toward the future.” Sewing joins AGI’s list of distinguished Global Leadership Award recipients.
Founded in 1870, Deutsche Bank’s mission has been to strengthen Germany’s investment flows and trade relations around the globe. Today, the Bank has four divisions to serve different clients: the Corporate Bank, Investment Bank, Private Bank, and asset manager DWS. Deutsche Bank has played a key role in financing transatlantic commerce and became the first German bank listed on the New York Stock Exchange in 2001. Deutsche Bank has a major presence in New York City, where it has helped finance major projects including the Moynihan Train Hall and Hudson Yards real estate development. The Bank opened its new Americas headquarters in midtown Manhattan in 2021.
“As the CEO of a company that has a long history of investment and engagement in the United States, it is an honor to be recognized by the only research institute in the United States that focuses exclusively on the German-American relationship,” said Sewing.
HCLTech, a leading global technology company, is sponsoring this year’s Global Leadership Award Dinner reception. HCLTech’s Chief Growth Officer and Head of Financial Services, Srinivasan Seshadri, said, “For two decades, HCLTech has partnered with Deutsche Bank to deliver solutions that help keep pace with the changing times. We are pleased to honor Christian Sewing as he continues to lead the bank in an era of advancing digitalization.”
AGI inaugurated the Global Leadership Award in 1994 as part of the Institute’s mission to strengthen ties between the U.S. and Germany. The Award recognizes the achievements of business and government leaders who have advanced the transatlantic partnership. Germany is a key partner of the U.S. in its most important international relationships: in transatlantic trade, within the NATO security alliance, and beyond. As two of the world’s leading trading nations, the U.S. and Germany share a deep and abiding interest in the health of the world economy.
