Virginia M. Rometty Receives the 2013 Global Leadership Award
AGI congratulates Virginia M. Rometty, Chairman, President, and CEO of IBM, on receiving the 2013 Global Leadership Award from the American-German Institute (AGI).
Each year, AGI recognizes the achievements of business pioneers and government leaders who have profoundly shaped the partnership between Germany and the United States. The award highlights the critical role that the German-American partnership plays in transatlantic relations. According to Jackson Janes, President of the Washington, DC-based think tank, “AGI is proud to present this year’s award to Ginni Rometty for her enduring positive influence on the German-American partnership.”
Mrs. Rometty began her career with IBM in 1981 in Detroit, Michigan. Since then she has held a series of leadership positions in IBM, most recently as Senior Vice President and Group Executive, IBM Sales, Marketing and Strategy. In this role, she was responsible for business results in the 170 global markets in which IBM operates and pioneered IBM’s rapid expansion in the emerging economies of the world. As part of this, she established IBM’s Growth Markets organization, which is expected to contribute as much as 30 percent of IBM revenues by 2015.
This year’s award was presented to Mrs. Rometty at the Institute’s 19th annual Global Leadership Award Dinner on Monday evening, November 11, 2013. The gala dinner will be followed the next day by AGI’s annual symposium entitled “The U.S. Elections 2012 and the German Elections 2013: What Do the Results Mean for Transatlantic Relations?” Taking place at the Deutsche Bank office of 60 Wall Street, the conference will address the elections, European banking union, generational change, cyber security, and the dual education system from a German / American perspective. A keynote speech by former Secretary of the Treasury John Snow will address the key challenges for the economy after the elections and what lies ahead for the U.S., Germany, and Europe.
