The transatlantic relationship is navigating significant changes. Russia’s full-scale war, ongoing regional conflicts, and changing U.S. policies toward Europe have prompted German leaders to re-evaluate the country’s policy in a number of fields – from democratic resilience, energy transition and climate action to foreign affairs and defense policy. Political culture in the United States and Europe has also changed significantly in recent years, including debates about culture war and identity politics. How U.S. as well as German and other European leaders navigate these issues will shape the future of transatlantic cooperation for years to come. This discussion examined the future of transatlantic cooperation, Germany’s evolving leadership role, the domestic political challenges and shifts in political culture shaping both countries.
Felix Banaszak is the Co-Chair of Alliance 90/The Greens, Germany’s third largest and leading progressive party according to latest polls. He has also served as a Member of the German Bundestag since 2021, where his work has focused on economic policy, climate-neutral industrial transformation and Germany’s energy transition. Before becoming Federal Chair of the party, he served in the Bundestag on the Economic Committee and the Budget Committee and held senior leadership positions within the party, including State Chair of North Rhine-Westphalia.
