Assessing the 2021 Bundestag Election
In conjunction with the BMW Center for German and European Studies and generously funded by the DAAD, AGI conducted a one-day conference devoted to assessing the results and impact of the 2021 Bundestag election.
The 2021 Bundestag election was the most important since 2005, marking the end of Chancellor Angela Merkel’s long tenure. Olaf Scholz is the new head of government, presiding over a novel three-party coalition. New policy departures have been announced and many challenges—especially in the areas of infrastructure, digitalization, and climate—have been addressed. But then, everything changed with Vladimir Putin’s invasion of Ukraine in February, leading to the most significant policy departures in a generation.
This one-day conference brought together scholars and practitioners from Germany and the United States to delve deeply into an analysis of the election results, the policy trajectory of the new government, and the momentous shifts especially in foreign and defense policy.
