The American-German Institute at Johns Hopkins University (AGI) cordially invites you to support the 25th annual Global Leadership Award Dinner. This esteemed award recognizes the achievements of business pioneers and government leaders who have profoundly shaped the partnership between Germany and the United States. This year’s event will honor Steve Angel, CEO of Linde plc. It also marks the 70th anniversary of the Federal Republic of Germany and the 30th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall. At AGI, we are proud that our organization has been a key part of the German-American partnership since 1983 and continues to play a vital role in the transatlantic relationship.
Steve Angel is the Chief Executive Officer of Linde plc. Prior to his current role, he was the President, Chairman, and CEO of Praxair, Inc. Linde plc was established through the merger of U.S.-based Praxair, Inc. and Germany-based Linde AG. Together, with a market capitalization of approximately $90 billion, they form one of the undisputed leaders in their industry. With almost 140 years of experience, Linde plc is dedicated to making our world more productive.

Chief Executive Officer of Linde plc
Steve Angel is the Chief Executive Officer of Linde plc as well as a member of the company’s Board of Directors. Prior to his current position at Linde plc, he was the President, Chairman, and CEO of Praxair, Inc. Mr. Angel joined Praxair in 2001 as the Executive Vice President and was later named President and Chief Operating Officer in 2006. Prior to his tenure at Praxair, Mr. Angel spent 22 years with General Electric. A native of Winston-Salem, North Carolina, Mr. Angel received his Bachelor of Science degree from North Carolina State University, where he studied civil engineering. He also holds an MBA from Loyola College in Baltimore. Mr. Angel currently serves on the board of directors of PPG Industries and the U.S.-China Business Council. He is also a member of The Business Council, an association of the Chief Executive Officers of some of the world’s most important business enterprises.

Ron Daniels
Honorary Co-Chair
Ronald J. Daniels became the 14th president of Johns Hopkins University in 2009. A law and economics scholar, Daniels previously served as provost and professor of law at the University of Pennsylvania and dean and James M. Tory Professor of Law of the Faculty of Law at the University of Toronto. He is a fellow of the American Philosophical Society and a member of the Order of Canada.

At Johns Hopkins, Daniels has focused his leadership on several key areas: strengthening inter-disciplinary collaboration in research and education, enhancing student access, deepening engagement with the city of Baltimore, and supporting economic and social innovation. During his tenure, the university has launched of a series of multi-disciplinary initiatives aimed at addressing some of society’s most vexing issues, bolstered the efforts of faculty, staff and students to translate discoveries into novel technologies, invested heavily in student access, and extended its significant community partnerships.
Richard Grenell
Honorary Co-Chair
Richard A. Grenell has served as U.S. Ambassador to Germany since May 8, 2018. He previously served as Director of Communications and Public Diplomacy for the U.S. Mission to the United Nations (2001-2008) and founded the global public affairs consultancy, Capitol Media Partners (2009-2017).

Grenell has also worked on six U.S. presidential campaigns, including as chief foreign affairs spokesman to the 2012 Republican presidential nominee. He has contributed to a variety of English and German-language media, from MSNBC and Fox to Bild and Focus. He holds an MPA from Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government and a BA from Evangel College.
Emily Margarethe Haber
Honorary Co-Chair
Emily Margarethe Haber has been German Ambassador to the United States since June 2018. Immediately prior to this, Haber, a career foreign service officer, was deployed to the Federal Ministry of the Interior, serving as State Secretary overseeing security and migration at the height of the refugee crisis in Europe. In this capacity, she worked closely with the US administration on topics ranging from the fight against international terrorism to global cyberattacks and cybersecurity.

In 2009, she was appointed Political Director and, in 2011, State Secretary at the Foreign Office, the first woman to hold either post. Earlier in her career, she served at the German Embassy in Ankara; in Berlin, she has served as Deputy Head of the Cabinet and Parliamentary Liaison Division, as Director of the OSCE Division, and as Deputy Director-General for the Western Balkans. Emily Haber has extensive knowledge of the Soviet Union and Russia, having worked both in the Soviet Union Division at the German Foreign Office and, on various occasions, at the German Embassy in Moscow, where she served as Head of the Economic Affairs Section and Head of the Political Affairs Department. Emily Haber attended schools in New Delhi, Bonn, Paris, Brussels, Washington, and Athens. From 1975 to 1980, she studied history and ethnology in Cologne, earning her PhD with a dissertation on German foreign policy during the Morocco crisis on the eve of World War I. Emily Haber is married to Hansjörg Haber. The couple has two sons.
Christoph Heusgen

Ambassador Christoph Heusgen was appointed Permanent Representative of Germany to the United Nations on July 26, 2017. Prior to this appointment and since 2005, Heusgen was the Foreign Policy and Security Adviser to his country’s Federal Chancellor, Angela Merkel. He served as Director and Head of the Policy Unit for High Representative Javier Solana in the General Secretariat of the Council of the European Union from 1999 to 2005.

Between 1988 and 1999, Heusgen served in various capacities at the Foreign Office in Bonn, including Deputy Director-General for European Affairs from 1997 to 1999; Head of Foreign Minister Klaus Kinkel’s Private Office in charge of European Affairs from 1993 to 1997, serving as Deputy Head since 1994. From 1990 and 1992, he was Deputy Head of the special section in charge of negotiations on the Treaty of Maastricht. He held the position of Private Secretary to the Coordinator for German-French Relations from 1988 to 1990. From 1986 to 1988, Heusgen worked in Germany’s Paris Embassy, having begun his foreign service career in the Press and Economic Affairs Office of his country’s Consulate in Chicago, where he worked from 1983 to 1986. He joined the foreign service in 1980. Heusgen is a graduate of the University of Saint Gallen in Switzerland, and Georgia South College in the United States. He earned a post-graduate degree from the University of Saint Gallen in 1980.

Wolfgang Reitzle
Chairman of the Board of Linde plc
Wolfgang Reitzle studied engineering and economics at the Technical University of Munich, Germany, and holds a Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering.

From 1976 to 1999, he worked for the car manufacturer BMW, where in 1987 he was appointed a regular Member of the Executive Board, responsible for research and development. In 1999, Wolfgang Reitzle took over as CEO of the Premier Automotive Group and Vice President of the US car manufacturer Ford. In 2002, he joined the Executive Committee of Linde, a world-leading gasses and engineering company, and was CEO from 2003 to May 2014.
Wolfgang Reitzle is Chairman of the Supervisory Board of Continental AG, Chairman of the Board of Linde plc, and Chairman of the Supervisory Board of Medical Park AG, as well as Member of the Supervisory Board of Axel Springer SE, Member of the Supervisory Board of Hawesko Holding AG, and Member of the Administrative Board of Ivoclar Vivadent AG.
In May 2014, he founded his own advisory and private equity company, Visioning.
Wolfgang Reitlze received the Global Leadership Award in 2010 and has been a member of AGI’s Board of Trustees since 2011.

Jan Vogler
Jan Vogler’s distinguished career has seen him perform with renowned conductors and internationally acclaimed orchestras around the world. He regularly premieres new works, most recently a newly-commissioned concerto for cello and orchestra by three composers from three different continents (Nico Muhly, Sven Helbig, and Zhou Long), each having composed a movement of the “Three Continents” concerto.

Highlights of Jan Vogler’s career as a soloist are concerts with the New York Philharmonic, Chicago, Boston, and Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestras. In addition to his classical concert activities as a soloist, he has collaborated with actor Bill Murray for their joint musical-literary project “Bill Murray, Jan Vogler & Friends – New Worlds”.
A prolific and multi-award-winning recording artist, he records exclusively for SONY Classical. His newest release, “Songbook,” with guitarist Ismo Eskelinen features works for and arranged for cello and guitar by composers including Satie, Ravel, de Falla, and Piazzolla.
The 2019-20 season includes two performances of the “Three Continents” concerto with the WDR Sinfonieorchester and the Singapore Symphony Orchestra, both led by Cristian Măcelaru, concert appearances with LaFil Milano led by Daniele Gatti, with the London Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Vladimir Jurowski, with the Komische Oper Berlin under Alondra de la Parra, with the Danish National Symphony Orchestra led by Fabio Luisi, with the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Omer Meir Wellber, a solo recital at the Elbphilharmonie Hamburg, a duo recital with pianist Martin Stadtfeld in Aachen, and the introduction of a new project, a cycle of Beethoven Sonatas, for the celebration of the upcoming Beethoven year.
Mr. Vogler has been artistic director of the Moritzburg Festival since 2001, and Intendant of the Dresden Music Festival since October 2008. He plays the Stradivari ‘Ex Castelbarco/Fau’ 1707.

What does Black Tie Optional mean?
Black tie optional means that male guests are invited to wear tuxes and women may wear evening gowns or cocktail dresses — what you would wear at a black-tie affair — but you don’t have to. It’s fine for men to wear nice dark suits and for women to wear dresses that aren’t necessarily Oscar-night material.
