The Greens’ Success in Baden-Württemberg
Baden-Württemberg – March 27, 2011
AGI Coverage of the 2011 Land Elections
In what has been called a “historic” finish for the Greens and a “debacle” for the CDU, the results from the March 27 Baden-Württemberg elections include a likely Minister-President Winfried Kretschmann under a Green-Red coalition after the CDU was driven from power for the first time since the 1950s. Nuclear energy and concerns after Japan – as well as the Stuttgart 21 train station – fueled the Greens’ results, but their clear positions on issues also distinguished them from the rest of the parties. The Greens were the only party to not lose electoral share from 2006, making the results pretty dismal for the others, even the likely coalition partner SPD.
