Between Nationalism and Multilateralism
A Renewed Approach for Transatlantic Economic Engagement
On September 26, 2019 AGI hosted an event to launch its new Issue Brief, “Between Nationalism and Multilateralism: A Renewed Approach for Transatlantic Economic Engagement.” The event brought together leading experts and practitioners in trade policy including Dan Mullaney, Assistant U.S. Trade Representative for Europe and the Middle East, Tomas Baert, Head of the Trade Section at the European Union delegation, Anabel González, Nonresident Senior Fellow at the Peterson Institute, Charles Boustany, Partner, Capitol Counsel LLC, and William Reinsch, Scholl Chair in International Business, Center for Strategic and International Studies. The panelists discussed the scope for bilateral U.S.-EU cooperation to advance high-standard international trade rules, the role of the World Trade Organization and potential avenues for reform, whether multilateralism can effectively respond to the challenge from China’s state-capitalist economic model, and the extent to which institutional or more ad hoc approaches can best strengthen international economic liberalism at the heart of the world trading system.
