Rebooting Transatlantic Trade
Diplomacy, Markets, and Rules
Against the backdrop of renewed trade talks between the United States and the European Union, the AGI Geoeconomics Program hosted an off-the-record roundtable discussion with Daniel Mullaney, Assistant United States Trade Representative for Europe and the Middle East, Tomas Baert, Head of the Trade and Agriculture Section at the European Union delegation, and Bill Reinsch, Scholl Chair in International Business at the Center for Strategic and International Studies and co-host of “The Trade Guys” podcast.
While U.S. section 232 national security tariffs remain on European steel and aluminum—and the investigation into imposing similar tariffs on automobiles continues—the prospects for a new bilateral and global agenda have brightened since the July 25th White House meeting between President Trump and European Commission President Juncker.
This event provided a forum for an exchange of views on the prospects for recharging transatlantic trade cooperation, including economic diplomacy to respond to China’s state-capitalist economy, stepped-up bilateral market access opportunities through regulatory alignment and political agreements on industrial tariffs, as well as options for WTO reform and other rules-making efforts.
