Germany and the United States: The Strategic Triangle in the Transatlantic Relationship
This off-the-record workshop session builds on an earlier AGI workshop on “China and the Future of Global Governance: A Transatlantic Strategy Discussion,” and will be a prologue to a conference on the strategic triangular relationship in fall 2018. Responding to China’s economic and geopolitical rise is now a top priority in Washington and Berlin. While the uncertainties of the Trump administration’s “America First” rhetoric and the difficult process of government coalition negotiation in Germany offer grim prospects for transatlantic cooperation, there are clearly areas of mutual interest on the question of China. The goal of this workshop is to exchange American and German perspectives and practices on these issues and explore opportunities for cooperation that would be beneficial to both countries.
