The United States and Germany in a Changing Geoeconomic World

May 30, 2017

In the face of growing challenges to an open, rules-based global economic order, there is a need to identify new ideas and narratives about the importance of international economic engagement for the United States, Germany, and the European Union. Ahead of the G20 summit in Hamburg in July under the current German presidency, AGI will convene a major international conference on Thursday, May 30, 2017 in Berlin on The United States and Germany in a Changing Geoeconomic World. The conference will begin with a keynote address by Matthias Machnig, State Secretary, German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy, followed by two sessions of moderated discussion. Session I, “The G20 Agenda: What Policies for Resilient Economies and Balanced Growth?,” will examine the role that fiscal, monetary, and regulatory policies can play in promoting stronger U.S. and European economies. Session II, “What Role for Global Economic and Trade Rules in Promoting Transatlantic Prosperity?”, will address the ways that regional and international trade policies and institutions can promote U.S., German, and European economic principles and interests in a wider global context.  Read the Symposium’s Issue Brief.
