Shabel Castro is currently a second-year student and a Toll Scholar at the University of Pennsylvania Law School. Additionally, she is pursuing a Master of Science in Social Policy at the School of Policy & Practice. Prior to attending law school, Shabel worked as a Legal Advocate at Part of the Solution (POTS), a nonprofit organization in New York that provides comprehensive and holistic services to community members in crisis. At POTS, Shabel advocated on behalf of clients who were at risk of being evicted from their homes or losing public benefits that support their livelihood. Dedicated to both social justice and to her community, Shabel was a peer mentor for first-generation college students and has volunteered facilitating English classes to adult immigrants and mentoring youth. Shabel is an alumnus of the Latino Leadership Initiative, a program that was hosted by the Harvard Kennedy School of Government. During this academic year, Shabel will serve as President of the Latino Law Students Association and as a Wharton Nonprofit Board Fellow with Team Up Philly, an organization dedicated to empowering young girls through sports.
She is a 2017-2018 participant in AGI’s “Transatlantic Exchange Program for Young Minorities,” sponsored by the Transatlantic Program of the Government of the Federal Republic of Germany through Funds of the European Recovery Program (ERP) of the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy.
