Raw Materials Governance in Developing Countries

AGI, the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), and the Brandenburg Institute for Society and Security (BIGS) are jointly organizing a series of conferences to discuss development-oriented raw materials policies and Western resource strategies towards developing countries. Two expert workshops will be held in Frankfurt am Main (July 8^th) and Stuttgart (July 9^th) and are being jointly organized in cooperation with local German business associations.

Raw materials can help developing countries finance their economic and social development. However, income from natural resources often leads to conflicts over distribution, corruption and a weakening of governance. At the same time, developed countries have a strong interest in maintaining an open and market-based access to raw materials. This dependency on the availability of raw materials entails that foreign, security and development policies also need to ensure access to critical raw materials by advancing resource governance based on principles of democracy and market economy. A development-oriented raw materials policy can thus benefit both developing and industrialized countries.
