Merkel and Hollande Address European Parliament
In recent years, as Europe has confronted crisis after crisis, we have seen the importance of German leadership, and of integrating that leadership into a community of nations working toward common goals. The recent address to the European Parliament by German chancellor Angela Merkel and French president Francois Hollande is indicative of this reality. As the refugee and migrant crisis in Europe grows, leaders must work together to forge a common solution for the benefit not only of the migrants, but for the Union as a whole. That Merkel and Hollande could jointly address the European Parliament, something previously done only by Helmut Kohl and Francois Mitterrand, further highlights the strides the two countries have made in achieving reconciliation for their own, and for broader Europe’s, benefit.
