Dr. Lily Gardner Feldman to Retire from AGI

The American-German Institute (AGI) at Johns Hopkins University announces that Dr. Lily Gardner Feldman will be retiring at the end of February 2019.  Dr. Gardner Feldman has served as Director of the AGI Society, Culture & Politics Program since 2008.  She first came to AGI from Tufts University in 1984 as a Fellow and then became the Institute’s first Research Director.  She went on to co-direct the Institute before returning full-time to her research and writing.

Dr. Gardner Feldman is recognized across the globe for her pioneering work on theories of international relations, developing models for “special relationships” and “reconciliation,” especially, in the latter case, the way Germany has confronted its past through a deliberate and crafted foreign policy enabling re-entry into the family of nations after World War II.  She has lectured and published often in North America, Europe, and Asia on the concept and practice of special relationships and of reconciliation.

At AGI, Dr. Gardner Feldman has created and chaired innovative programs that engage young people in German-American relations, including the Program for Young East German Scholars, the Exchange Program for Young Minorities in Germany and the U.S., and the Harry & Helen Gray Reconciliation Fellowship.  Dr. Gardner Feldman will continue to be associated with the Institute after her retirement as a Senior Fellow. Her colleagues at AGI look forward to her continued guidance, insights, and friendship, which have been invaluable to the Institute for many years.
